In the early years of my construction career, I held a simple belief: the lower the cost at which I could complete a project, the more successful I was. My entire effort was dedicated to ensuring investors exited with higher satisfaction. Back then, that logic seemed sound. Yet years later, one simple question changed everything: After a building is sold, who actually lives with my decisions? The investor? No. They sell and move on. The person who lives with my choices is a family who, for decades, will open those windows each morning, walk upon those floors, and lean against those walls.
