In construction, there is an ever-present temptation to believe that micromanaging every variable produces a superior outcome. Yet a development is far more than concrete and steel; it is an ecosystem of people, expectations, relationships, and inherent uncertainties. Anahita confronted me with a vital realization: 'building cheaper' is never synonymous with 'building better'. In the early years of my construction career, I held a simple belief: the lower the cost at which I could complete a project, the more successful I was. My entire effort was dedicated to ensuring investors exited with higher satisfaction. Back then, that logic seemed sound. Yet years later, one simple question changed everything: After a building is sold, who actually lives with my decisions? The investor? No. They sell and move on. The person who lives with my choices is a family who, for decades, will open those windows each morning, walk upon those floors, and lean against those walls.
